When we hear from a website owner that a friend gave them a surefire secret for getting to the top of Google... it's just about always a "here we go again!" moment.
One of our clients listened to such a "friend" and shortly thereafter received this nice little note from Google:

Because you will be hammered with advice and solicitations for getting to the top of Google, here are a few rules:
Rule 1 - Before you pay for Search Engine Optimization ("SEO") services by someone who cold-called you or sent you spam email offering to help you get better placement on Google, do some homework. Google their name, Google their company name, and Google all the phone numbers you can associate with them.
If you find nothing of any interest, we suggest you worry. If you find tons of scam reports, read them and make your own judgement.
Bill's absolute favorite bit of advice directly from Google is the following:
Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue. Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:
I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories..."
Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited email about search engines as you do for "burn fat at night" diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.
Rule 2 - You can't shine dirt. SEO is useless if it takes people to a website that turns them off.
Rule 3 - If the site is done properly, you are already 80% done with SEO. (Bill makes sure your site is set up right to begin with.)
Rule 4 - The remaining 20% will cost a lot more than you want to pay. Will the extra sales you get be worth thousands of dollars a month?
Rule 5 - There are many alternatives for going after that 20%.
